A New Dawn: Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at Staten Island’s Offshore Wind Training School
We are thrilled to announce the successful inauguration of New York State’s first certified offshore wind training school, located right here on Staten Island. The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on a bright Friday morning at Mariners Harbor, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener future.
The school is a collaborative venture of TMI Waterfront, Indigo River, and Menotti Enterprise, firms renowned for their expertise in waterfront development and design, renewable energy, safety training, and workforce development. The training school is uniquely situated on an actual working barge on Richmond Terrace, enabling the classroom to travel to different communities throughout the five boroughs.
Our training program is designed to provide basic safety training for personnel who work on wind turbines. Upon completion of their training, students will receive a certification, equipping them with the skills necessary to contribute to the renewable energy sector. The program is open to union trades, contractors, and under or unemployed workers, with a particular emphasis on low-income, marginalized, and environmental justice communities.
“The transition to renewable energy presents our city with a unique opportunity to build a skilled workforce for a more sustainable future,” said NYC Comptroller Brad Lander. “Offshore Wind training will play a critical role in preparing union tradespeople and workers from underinvested communities to enter this emerging industry.”
The Staten Island Economic Development Corporation has welcomed our venture, with Mike Cusick, the agency’s president and CEO, stating, “A direct result of this effort will be an increase in green jobs for Staten Island residents, as New York State moves quickly into the green economy.”
Our training school is more than just a company; it’s an industry that will be here for decades to come, contributing to Staten Island’s role as a major player in the state’s ambitious offshore wind energy goals. The borough’s projected offshore wind manufacturing and staging sites are currently featured in multiple proposals for the state’s third offshore wind solicitation, moving them closer to eventual operation.
We invite interested participants to sign up for the program and join us in our mission to create a more sustainable future. Together, we can harness the power of the wind and transform the energy landscape of New York.
